Camran Nezhat, MD, FACOG, FACS
View Curriculum Vitae A few words from James Carter M.D. Ph.D. Camran Nezhat, M.D. is an internationally renowned Laparoscopic Surgeon, Scientist and Innovator at Stanford University Medical Center. He has been practicing medicine and surgery at Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto since 1993. He is the pioneer and leading practitioner in the field of laparoscopic surgery, specializing in laparoscopic treatment of severe endometriosis involving multiple organs, management of infertility, myomas of the uterus, and other pelvic diseases. He is the forerunner of starting to operate on the video monitor rather than looking through the eyepiece of the laparoscope. This technique (video laparoscopy) revolutionized operative laparoscopy in all the disciplines of surgery. He has been instrumental in modifying many established procedures performed by laparotomy to laparoscopy, with similar or improved results. Dr. Nezhat has extensive experience in hysteroscopic surgery and he routinely performs hysteroscopic procedures for congenital abnormalities of the uterus, like septate uterus, myomas of the uterus, and endometrial ablation. By collaborating with specialists in different disciplines, such as general, urological, colorectal, and thoracic surgeons, Dr. Camran Nezhat has performed many procedures laparoscopically for the first time, surgeries once considered inoperable by the minimally invasive method. Dr. Camran Nezhat was the first physician to treat extensive endometriosis of the ureter, bladder, bowel, liver, and diaphragm laparoscopically. He published the first ever successful laparoscopic treatment of extensive endometriosis in 1986, proving that the limiting factor for operative laparoscopy is the skill and experience of the surgeon and the availability of proper instrumentation. To our knowledge, no other living and practicing surgeon has done as many laparoscopic surgeries for the treatment of endometriosis. As a result of his dedication, patients for the first time can regain their quality of life a few days after surgery instead of a few months. Thousands of surgeons from all over the world have traveled to attend his post-graduate courses and lectures.
Dr. Camran Nezhat has a special interest in endometriosis and is an advocate of early detection and treatment. The extreme conditions of extragenital endometriosis as found on the lungs, fallopian tubes, and ureter were once considered operable only via laparotomy. These areas are so delicate that few surgeons in the world are experienced enough to treat them; Dr. Camran Nezhat was not only the forerunner to successfully treat these difficult conditions laparoscopically, he was also the pioneer who insisted that it was possible. In the early 1990s, Dr. Camran Nezhat was invited to join Stanford University Medical Center by Linda Meier and Ken Bloom, then Chair of the Board and CEO, respectively. He has been teaching laparoscopic surgery at Stanford while in private practice in Palo Alto, a suburb of San Francisco. He is Clinical Professor at Stanford University Medical School and Director of the Center for Special Minimally Invasive Surgery. He also holds a fellowship program to train future laparoscopic surgeons, a part of combined program with the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists and Society of Reproductive surgeons. By sharing his knowledge in laparoscopic surgery with different disciplines of surgery (like general, gastrointestinal, urology, cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, oncology, etc) at Stanford University Medical Center, Stanford now is one of the best laparoscopic surgery centers in the country. Recently, Dr Camran Nezhat's peers elected him President of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS) beginning October 3, 2004. The SLS is the largest multi-disciplinary endoscopy society in the world. Dr Camran Nezhat has been performing and teaching surgery routinely at Stanford University Medical Center since September 1993 in Palo Alto, a suburb of San Francisco. Private patients who come to the Center for Special Minimally Invasive Surgery are pleased to discover that Dr. Nezhat presonally performs their surgery and is very accessible both before and after to help ease fears and provide answers to difficult questions. Dr. Camran Nezhat has co-authored two text-books and over 350 book chapters, articles, abstracts, and editorials. He has received numerous awards from the most significant and leading medical societies-such as American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists, American College of Surgeons, American Society of Reproductive Medicine, and Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons-commending his surgical skill, pioneering surgical techniques, research, and educational activities. Please view the most recent awards and videos. He is a member of many distinguished societies and reviewer for academic journals. His research interests are in infertility and its relation with endometriosis, myomas of the uterus, and congenital abnormalities of the uterus. To this end, Dr. Camran Nezhat has set up the non-profit Center for Special Minimally Invasive Surgery Fund at Stanford University to provide research and education for young physicians and scientists across the world, in order to assist in expediting a "cure" for these debilitating disorders that affect millions of women.
